The gemstone Topaz has long been treasured as a symbol of deep and enduring love and affection, and the ancient Greeks even believed it acted as a protector by making the wearer invisible in emergencies! The Egyptians believed that topaz was tinted with the golden glow of the sun god Ra and the Romans associated topaz with Jupiter, god of the sun. In the middle ages some believed Topaz could cure the plague, and it was also thought to help with eye problems, depression and was used to increase the intellect. Topaz is a silicate mineral of aluminium and fluorine and comes in many colours, including blue, pink, white and yellow. Delicate sky or rich, lustrous dark blue tend to be the most popular colours, but the golden ‘imperial’ topaz is the rarest and most highly valued variety of the gemstone. Astrology associates topaz with the signs of Scorpio, Sagittarius and Pisces.
