Turquoise Birthstone for December
Turquoise is one of the oldest known gems and was thought to have powerful metaphysical properties by many ancient cultures. Traditionally associated with good fortune and beauty, this unique and beautifully coloured blue or green stone is believed to relax the mind and relieve mental tensions, calm emotions, ease stress and promote peace and prosperity. Turquoise is found in desert regions throughout the world and has been mined from at least 6000 BC by early Egyptians. In ancient Mexico the stone was reserved for the gods and could not be worn by mere mortals. The stone was believed by many cultures to guard against evil, while to American Indians turquoise signified the god of the sky alive in the earth. Turquoise is a hydrous copper aluminum sulfate and the amazing blue colours in the stone are due to the presence of copper in its chemical composition, while green turquoise has more aluminium in its make up. Sometimes linked with the 17th wedding anniversary, turquoise is also associated with the creative, clever star sign Aquarius.
